Why we're here:
This blog is to highlight the unjust persecution of legitimate non-TV users at the hands of TV Licensing. These people do not require a licence and are entitled to live without the unnecessary stress and inconvenience caused by TV Licensing's correspondence and employees.

If you use equipment to receive live broadcast TV programmes, or to watch or download on-demand programmes via the BBC iPlayer, then the law requires you to have a licence and we encourage you to buy one.

If you've just arrived here from a search engine, then you might find our Quick Guide helpful.

TV Licensing Laid Bare: July 2013 Edition Released

An updated version of our free ebook TV Licensing Laid Bare has just been released.

The rewrite was necessary due to recent changes in the law, most notably the repealing of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967.

The book begins by identifying the key players in the TV licence system. The emphasis then shifts towards the legal basis of the fee, and clearly explains circumstances in which a TV licence is required. After a short analysis of how the licence fee is spent the book gives detailed information about how the TV licence is enforced. The book concludes with practical words of advice for the thousands of legally licence free people, who are regularly harassed by TV Licensing's correspondence and employees.

The July 2013 edition also includes a new chapter called "TV Licensing Bloopers", which recounts in cringeworthy detail some of TV Licensing's most notable screw-ups.

Please share it with anyone else seeking advice about how to deal with TV Licensing.

The latest version of TV Licensing Laid Bare can be downloaded free from this page.

Any chance of linking to an actual .PDF file rather than this google docs crap?

Easier to share a document on the go and save it to the hard drive than share a link with crappy formatting and navigation.

As a traveller my bandwidth is limited and expensive so having it on my hard drive or email server as a .pdf is preferable.

Its a good book and well worth a read, irrespective of your current status with TV Licensing.

Thanks for your feedback everyone.

I have now added an alternative download link to the ebook page. It's via DepositFiles, which I hope doesn't cause too many problems.

Hi, thanks for your work in continuing to make this available and maintaining it. I'd like to point out an error and omission in it. In the book it states:

"Conversely, anyone who pays the full fee in a single transaction gets exactly what they pay for."

There is a caveat which I am sure you're aware. The license runs from the 1st of the month in which it is purchased. As a result, if the first payment is not on the 1st of the month it will cover less than a year. If the payment is on the last day of the month then it will only cover 11 months.

The book does mention the license runs from the 1st but does not highlight the implication of this for first time license users.

TVL claim this simplifes administration, although why they feel their customers should be short changed to fund their administration is beyond me. Anyone wanting to buy their first license should do so on the 1st of the month to avoid being short-changed.

If your book could include this in a future revision it would help ensure that people who need to buy a license actually get what they are paying for.

Regards,
Chris

Thanks for your comment Chris, and we do apologise for that genuine oversight.

We've actually written about the con job you mention on a few occasions, so I'm pretty embarrassed that it hasn't been mentioned in the book.

Will fix that for next time.
